Whirlpool Sales, Profits Up Slightly

BENTON HARBOR — Whirlpool Corp. (NYSE: WHR) reported first quarter net income of $153 million or $2.01 a share, up from $150 million or $1.92 a share in the first quarter of 2016.

Revenue was $4.79 billion, up from $4.62 billion a year earlier.

Women In Defense Offers Scholarships

SOUTHFIELD – The Michigan Chapter of Women in Defense, an organization for women in the defense industry, announces applications are being accepted for the 2017 Women in Defense Horizons – Michigan Scholarship.

The scholarship is available to women who are United States citizens, residents of Michigan, enrolled at an accredited Michigan college or university, have at least junior academic status, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.25.

Applicants should also demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career related to national security and defense. Preferred fields of study include security studies, military history, government relations, engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, business (as it relates to national security or defense), law (as it relates to national security or defense), international relations, political science, economics. Others will be considered if the applicant can successfully demonstrate relevance to a career in the areas of national security or defense.

Since the scholarship was established in 2009, 28 women have received more than $100,000 in educational funding under the program.

Gentex Sales, Profits Rise

ZEELAND — Gentex Corp. (Nasdaq: GNTX), the Zeeland-based automotive and electronics manufacturer, reported net income of $97.6 million or 33 cents a share in the first quarter ended March 31, up from $80.3 million or 28 cents a share in the same quarter a year earlier.

Revenue was $453.5 million, up from $405.6 million a year earlier.

AT&T To Launch Gigabit Service To The Home, Business In GR

DETROIT — AT&T Inc. announced it will expand its ultra-fast AT&T
Fiber internet service in parts of Grand Rapids, the company’s first
expansion of the service in West Michigan.

AT&T introduced the service in metropolitan Detroit last year —
specifically, parts of Canton Township, Clinton Township, Novi and
South Lyon — and plans to expand the service to Ann Arbor, Detroit,
Ferndale and Roseville later this year.

The service will offer homes, apartments and small business locations service at a blazing 1 billion bits per second.

AT&T has rolled out the service in 52 metropolitan areas across the country and plans to add another 23 soon.

AT&T says gigabit speed allows users to download a 90-minute HD movie in a little over 30 seconds. It also allows effortless, glitch-free telecommuting and videoconferencing.

The company says it invested nearly $1.65 billion in its wireless and wireline networks in Michigan between 2013 through 2015.

LG Chem Launches Residential Battery Systems in North America

TROY — LG Chem Ltd., a manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for automotive, stationary and consumer applications, has launched new residential battery systems in the North American market.

The launch follows successful completion of UL certification and represents LG Chem’s initial foray into the North American residential market. The home energy storage systems are already being sold in Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

HOUGHTON — Researchers from Michigan Technological University have released the annual Winter Study detailing updates on the ecology of Isle Royale National Park.

For the second year in a row, the Isle Royale wolf population remains a mere two. Researchers from Michigan Tech say that as the wolf population stays stagnant, the moose population will continue to grow at a rapid pace. And this could have a significant impact on the island’s famed forests.
