ACEC Recognizes Michigan’s Top Engineering, Surveying Projects

LANSING — The American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan honored firms for engineering and surveying excellence during the association’s annual Engineering and Surveying Excellence Awards ceremony.

On March 11, design professionals and guests gathered at The Fillmore Detroit to recognize outstanding Michigan engineering and surveying projects from the past year, as well as engineering professionals who have significantly contributed to the profession.

Lawrence Tech to build fourth residence hall

SOUTHFIELD – The Lawrence Technological University Board of Trustees approved construction of a new, 95,000-square-foot residence hall on its Southfield campus, to open in the fall of 2018.

The new residence hall will be four stories tall and include space for 300 students, along with 22 resident assistants and housing administration staff, according to Michael Guthrie, a partner at inForm Studio, the Northville architecture firm that is designing it.

All four principals at inForm are Lawrence Tech architecture alumni – Guthrie (Bachelor of Science in Architecture, 1995), Corey Lavigne (Bachelor of Architecture, 1996), Ken Van Tine (Bachelor of Science in Architecture, 1985, Bachelor of Architecture, 1986), and Gina Van Tine (Bachelor of Science in Architecture, 1989, Bachelor of Architecture, 1994).

Enrollment Open for the 2017 Turner School of Construction Management

DETROIT — Enrollment has begun for the free, eight-week “Turner School of Construction Management” training program in Detroit which will begin in March 2017.

The course is designed to enhance the technical and managerial skills of small, minority, women-owned, veteran-owned, and/or disadvantaged business enterprises. Individuals enrolled in the program gain insight and meaningful tools to help grow their construction business. More than 30,000 people have graduated from the program since its inception in 1969.

Michigan Tech Begins $24M In Construction Projects

HOUGHTON — Construction has begun on projects included in a $24.3 million bond issue, and already Michigan Technological University’s investment is having a major economic impact on the community, President Glenn Mroz told the Michigan Tech Board of Trustees at its meeting on Friday.

Contracts totaling $6.3 million have been signed with 16 contractors locally, throughout the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Lansing’s SkyVue Project Takes Next Step

LANSING — At 8 a.m. Friday, demolition of the former Story Oldsmobile dealership on Michigan Avenue in Lansing began, the next step in the $77 million SkyVue on Michigan project.

The project is being built by Rise Real Estate of Atlanta, Ga. The project will contain a 667,000-square-foot nine-story mixed-use building featuring retail, parking, and 359 residential units. The north end of the development is adjacent to the Frandor Shopping Center.

Tech Tour Day Five: Ferris State Seeking State Help To Fill More Of The STEM Pipeline

BIG RAPIDS — There are some universities that give off a
vibe of overwhelming practicality, a serious sense of purpose.
Very few people are there to find themselves. They are there
to find a better life for themselves and their families.

Ferris State University, at the edge of Up North and the
Manistee National Forest, not quite an hour north of Grand
Rapids, is a place like that. Which is why I’ve always looked
forward to visits here. And Tuesday’s visit — on Day Five of
The Engineering Society of Detroit 2015 Fall Tech Tour,
sponsored by Michigan Technological University — was no
exception.

My day began with a meeting at Ferris State’s Swan building,
home to many of its engineering programs, with Jeff
Hardesty, associate professor of welding engineering
technology and coordinator of Ferris State’s wildly popular
welding engineering technology program.

How popular? Try a one- to two-year waiting list to get into the
program. And the reason is that industry is snapping up Ferris
State’s graduates, in both its two-year associate in applied
science in welding technology program, and its four-year
welding technology bachelor of science, as fast as Ferris
State can turn them out.

“There is a shortage of bodies across the welding industry,
welders, welding technicians and welding engineers,”
Hardesty said.

He said graduates in the Ferris State associate’s program will
likely go to work as a welding supervisor or robot
programmer. “They get very strong, sound welding skills, and
add skills in inspection, automation, fabrication, that every
welder doesn’t have,” Hardesty said. Starting salaries are
$40,000 and up.

The four-year degree recipients, meanwhile, go to work at
automakers and other manufacturers as a project engineer,
aside to a product or vehicle to work with product designers to
make sure the product in question can be welded practically
at a suitable volume. Welding engineers also work with other
engineers ot build assembly lines, or may work at engineering
consulting companies. Starting salaries here are $60,000 and
up.

After they spend a year on the basics of welding, students
move on to more advanced technologies like running welding
robots. Hardesty said current technology allows welders to
“go from art to part.”

Surprisingly, the biggest employer of Ferris State welding
grads isn’t an automaker — it’s tractor and heavy equipment
maker John Deere, Hardesty said.

There are about 200 people in Ferris State’s welding program
— which is capacity. “Given the size of our facility and the size
of our faculty we just can’t handle any more,” Hardesty said.

That’s why Ferris State is seeking state funding to more than
double the size of its welding technology space in the Swan
Building and Swan Building Annex to 30,000 square feet,
which would allow it to almost double its class sizes.

Ferris State’s welding program is very active in the
community, hosting an annual high school welding competition
that draws 150 students, and building a 25-foot-tall metal
gazebo for a Big Rapids park. The program also teaches
students how to use X-ray and ultrasound equipment to test
welds.

Next, it was a quick trip over to Ferris State’s Granger Center
for Construction and HVACR, home to many of its academic construction programs.

My first interview there was with Doug Zentz, HVAC program
coordinator, who runs a program that trains about 230
students in the latest technologies in heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration.

Zentz joined the program in 2003 after 23 years in the HVAC
industry, including two stints at furnace and air conditioner
manufacturer Trane. Zentz has a bachelor’s degree in
mechanical engineering from Purdue University and a
master’s degree in career and technical education from Ferris
State.

“I love what I do,” Zentz said. “I love the ability to teach the
young who don’t know anything and get those ‘Oh, I got it’
moments. It’s hard to put a price on that.”

Zentz said technology is having a big effect on HVAC just as it
is everything else, with computer-aided design making
systems much less “field engineered” — assembled at the job
site — and much more plug-and-play.

And, he said, the real emphasis on HVAC these days is
energy efficiency.

Like many of Ferris State’s engineering programs, there is an
associate’s degree available. Ferris’ associates in HVACR
started in 1945, in response to widespread adoption of
refrigerators in American homes, and commercial buildings’
adoption of early forms of air conditioning. The bachelor’s
degree was added in the 1970s, after the first oil shock, as a
bachelor’s in energy management. Today, it’s called a
bachelor’s in HVACR and building energy management.

“The art of building sciences is booming right now for a
couple of basic reasons,” Zentz said. “If you stop and think
about resources, energy, and our environment … buildings
consume twice the energy of all forms of transportation put
together globally. In the U.S. it’s actually a little higher than
that. The other thing is the environment. Buildings indirectly or
directly cause more harm to the environment than all forms of
transportation. So the need of society to make buildings
smarter is greater than ever. We’ve been working on making
transportation more energy-efficient for 30 years now. We’ve
been working on industry for 30 years. What we haven’t done
yet is figure out how ot make buildings smarter. And now, a lot
of smart people are starting to realize this.”

Zentz said government regulations requiring more energy
efficient buildings are in the works, and could result in huge
national energy savings — and huge career opportunities for
the kind of building energy experts that Ferris State is turning
out.

Ferris State students are participating in that effort. Zentz said
Ferris students conducted an energy audit at a major public
building in downtown Grand Rapids and found $750,000 a
year in energy savings.

How big will the Ferris State HVACR program get? We could
double the size of our program,” Zentz said. “The hardest part
would be finding enough competent, professional
professors.”

To draw in more high school students, Ferris has created a
one-week summer on-campus HVAC camp. An industry
endowment provides 50 percent scholarships off the $600
price. Zentz said more information is available at the HVACR

My final visit at Granger Center was with Suzanne K. Miller,
associate professor and program coordinator of Ferris
State’s Construction Technology and Management Programs.

The program offers two different associate’s degrees — one
in building construction technology, the other in civil
engineering technology. They both feed into a bachelor of
science degree in construction management — but students
who stop after two years would be likely to go in different
directions, the civil engineering technology students to road
construction companies, state agencies or civil engineering
firms, the construction two-year degrees to construction
companies specializing in commercial and industrial buildings.

Students with the four-year degree, Miller said, can go in
dozens of directions — all of them hiring, all of them lucrative.
She said students in the program work for construction
managers, general contractors and specialty subcontractors,
or may go to work as an owner’s representative for anything
from a major university to a health care system.

Miller herself started out as an architect, getting bachelor’s
and master’s degrees in architecture from the University of Michigan. But she decided to add a second master’s degree in construction management in order to make herself more marketable — and got hooked on construction. She worked for major construction firms like Barton Malow and Clark Construction before joining Ferris State in 2005.

“I came here to get people fired up about construction,” Miller
said. “I didn’t even know it was a career until I went into
architecture. People don’t realize it really does take a degree.
There’s a lot that goes into being a construction manger.
People who get our degree aren’t swinging a hammer. It’s
people skills, management, science and engineering… You
have to know a little bit about every trade that’s out there.”

The program now has 253 students enrolled, still below its
2008 peak, meaning the program is still recovering from the
2007-09 recession.

But she said construction is now roaring back, with an
increasing emphasis on high-tech design and energy
efficiency. “We’re doing a curriculum revision right now with a
heavier emphasis on mechanical and electrical knowledge,”
she said. And the use of more design software, she said,
“promotes prefabrication, which gives you better quality
control. It’s always better to fabricate in a controlled
environment than on a job site where it’s freezing cold and
you’re using generator power.” And, she said, the emphasis also makes it easier to find problems in construction documents before field work starts.

And after a greeting and conversation with John R. Schmidt,
professor and director of Ferris State’s School of Built
Environment, that’s where my morning-plus at Ferris State
ended, amid smart kids who know just where they’re going,
and the industry-savvy professors who will help them get
there. It’s a worthy stop on any Tech Tour.

Tomorrow the ESD 2015 Fall Tech Tour, sponsored by
Michigan Technologcial University, stops in at Grand Valley
State University’s downtown engineering campus. Can’t wait
to see what this rapidly growing university, part of the dynamic,
revitalized downtown Grand Rapids, is up to!

High Tech Classroom Building Gets ESD Tour

WARREN — Members and guests of The Engineering
Society of Detroit enjoyed a tour of Wayne State University’s
Advanced Technology Education Center, across 12 Mile
Road from Macomb Community College’s South Campus.

Jason Davis, LEED AP, a senior project manager in facilities
planning and management at Wayne State, told the tour group
that WSU bought the former Farmer Jack grocery store in
2010. A full gutting of the building, he said, found “a lot of
mold and asbestos.” Nevertheless, the project to turn the
40,000-square-foot structure into a stunning showplace for
high-tech education preserved as much of the exterior shell
and roof deck as could be saved.

Davis said a complete retrofit of electrical and mechanical
systems gave the building energy efficiency that exceeds
LEED Silver requirements.

The project was a winner in this year’s 41st Annual ESD Construction and Design Awards.

ESD Tours Dearborn’s Award-Winning Dingell Transit Center

DEARBORN — Members of The Engineering Society of Detroit got an up-close look at the newest addition to Dearborn’s magnificent historic attractions — the John D. Dingell Transit Center — in an exclusive, members-only tour Wednesday.

While it only opened last fall, planning for the Dingell Center began in 2000, when the city received a Michigan Department of Transportation study grant. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 — better known as the federal stimulus — provided the $28 million for site improvements, railroad track expansion, and the $12 million building itself.

The idea was to create a Dearborn train and bus station more convenient to The Henry Ford, Dearborn’s west downtown district, and the campuses of the University of Michigan – Dearborn and Henry Ford College.

The project went through several design iterations, but stuck mostly with the one chosen by a public workshop process in 2004. The building kept traditional design elements like brick facade and rounded arches, though it’s more contemporary looking on its north side, which faces Michigan Avenue, and more antique in appearance on its south side, which faces The Henry Ford. (Indeed, designers from Neumann/Smith Architecture of Southfield had to show with 3D modeling that people visiting The Henry Ford’s 1828-vintage Firestone Farm building wouldn’t have their historic experience disturbed by the station’s architecture on the northern horizon.)

A bridge over the railroad tracks provides direct access to the north end of The Henry Ford, but that gate has not yet been opened for visitor use.

The design team also overcame a unique challenge under federal disability law by creating boarding platforms that flip up if freight carriers that use the same state-owned tracks exercise their right to transport extra-wide, extra-low loads.

The site also has sustainability features that will likely lead to LEED certification, including LED lighting inside and out, bioswales to minimize stormwater runoff, landscaping that doesn’t require irrigation, and heating and cooling provided by heat pumps fed by 60 geothermal wells dug beneath the parking lot.

Many of the building’s windows are also covered in tiny gray dots called ceramic frit that reduce solar heat gain while still letting in the view from outside.

Most of the building’s floors are long-lasting, easy-maintenance terrazo — chips of marble, quartz, granite and other materials, locked in place with a cement binder.

And the building features a custom ceramic mural created by students of Dearborn’s four high schools, and a historic narrow-gauge train display provided by The Henry Ford.

The project won honorable mention in this year’s ESD Design & Construction Awards. Sharing the honors with Neumann/Smith were designers SmithGroupJJR of Ann Arbor and constructors Clark Construction Co. of Lansing and Tooles Contracing Group LLC of Detroit.
